Travel tips and FAQs
Where can I go?
You can go anywhere that is accessible by water. This includes river cruises into the heart of Europe, Africa, and North and South America. Visit the islands of the Caribbean, South Pacific or Mediterranean. Enjoy the coast of Alaska, Great Britain or New Zealand. If you have a destination which you are not sure about, ask your Holiday Cruises and Tours agent. They can usually find a cruise which will take you there.
Will I be confined in the ship?
Most cruise ships are large and full of resort style amenities which make your onboard experience feel open and free. Join the diverse offering of classes, sports, entertainment and organized activities. For those needing some rest and relaxation, there are places to lounge and soak up sun while enjoying a view which is constantly changing. Our onboard entertainment can include movie presentations, gifted lecturers and Las Vegas style shows. To stretch your “sea legs,” most cruise ships dock often. Every port offers a new area to explore, shop and dine. Which leads to the next question.
What can we do in port?
There are so many things to do when your ship docks at port. You can explore the local culture, take a tour of the area, go hiking through exotic terrain or try horseback riding on the beach. Be entertained by the local band or dance to the beat at the area nightclubs. Learn a new sport or enjoy an old one. Take an adventure into ancient ruins or shop in the glitter of a modern city. The opportunities are endless. A cruise allows you to sample the offerings of many destinations while enjoying your travel experience. No changing flights or packing and unpacking at each destination, just pure enjoyment.
Do I have to be gone long?
Cruises come in many different itineraries. You can find cruises as long as several months or as short as a couple of days.
Will I need my passport?
This is dependant on the vacation you take, but if you are traveling outside the US the answer is yes you need a passport. The post office is a great source for obtaining a passport. It is best to make an appointment because not all locations have the service and it helps to avoid waiting in line. For more information and to download the forms go to www.travel.state.gov.
Are all cruises “black tie?”
Some cruises offer formal attire for onboard parties as part of the cruising experience. Most of these cruises have tuxedo rental aboard ship, though even on very formal cruises you can attend functions in a dark suit and tie. There are cruises which are much less formal and require no special dress. Ask your cruise agent about finding the type cruise which best fits your lifestyle.
Will it be easy to meet people if I am single?
Whether you’re single, a couple or a group, you will be given many opportunities to meet and get to know the others on board. Cruise ships have parties, classes and organized activities to help people mingle and meet. If you would like a cruise that specifically appeals to a particular group of people, just let your Holiday Cruises and Tours agent know and they’ll be happy to find the right cruise for you.
How is the food?
World class! You will find an incomparable selection of delicious entrees, soups, salads and desserts. All included in the price of your cruise. If you need to request a special diet, just let your Holiday Cruises and Tours agent know in advance.
What about “sea sickness?”
Cruise lines choose the calmest waters for sailing and have installed stabilizers in the ships to offset rocking. These precautions, as well as accurate weather information and the large size of most popular cruise ships, make for smooth sailing. There are also very effective medications which have eliminated motion sickness, for the most part.
